Welcome to Man of Mastery!

Man of Mastery is a resource for you, here to help unlock the secrets of elite-level life performance – align happiness, fulfillment, health, wellness, productivity, and peace. Succeed harmoniously in family, relationships, career, finance, fitness, emotional control, and mental toughness. Discover and live your unique, authentic purpose.

Together we will…

  • Strive to be the best men, fathers, sons, husbands, leaders, providers and protectors possible
  • Learn from executives, athletes, entrepreneurs, academics, relationship experts, wealth managers, and warriors
  • Embrace success as a process – not a singular event – achieved through grit, resilience, and perseverance
  • Study strategies to achieve extraordinary results through simple consistent actions, accomplishing what others deem impossible
  • Start each day energized, focused, calm, clear, in balance with priorities aligned to ethos and progress towards greater purpose

If you’ve found your way here, I suspect that, like me, you too are on a journey, in pursuit of what Mastery means in your life…that you are already accomplished but remain curious and ready to grow with a sense that a greater harmony is possible in success, happiness, and fulfillment.

We are building a movement of men looking to learn and optimize how they show up every day personally, professionally, mentally, physically, and emotionally. Whatever level you’re at, there’s still another level, another gear, something to aim for, and other guys to learn from.

Are you already making the biggest, most meaningful impact you can in all areas of your life? What have you delayed, put aside, or forgotten? If not now, when? If not you, who?

So, reject the urge to settle, the gravitational pull to be average. If you’re ready to get connected…to a tribe, to yourself, to something deeper, more powerful, and more meaningful and to a higher standard of life performance then…

Set audacious goals for yourself and work with me and others here in the Man of Mastery community to make them happen. Get after it!

Our communities, country, and world seem to have veered off course and are in desperate need of positive change.

In the course of becoming civilized we’ve gotten soft. Too many of us squander and take for granted the fortune of first-world life. When is the last time you were truly hungry, in pain, or scared? By and large, we don’t do hard things anymore or challenge ourselves in ways that strike at our DNA. It’s unfortunate and erosive because growth and fulfillment really do lie beyond the comfort zone. Fear used to be useful as a survival mechanism but what once preserved man now controls us and isolates us from each other.

Constant distraction has become the norm. We are overwhelmed by the modern pace of information, technology, and…life. It seems like time moves faster than ever, where days and weeks race by with too many things left undone, goals deferred, and visions faded. Too many people are adrift, sleep-walking through life without design or intent. Are you renting a life of someone else’s design or do you own one of your own creation?

Somehow civil behavior has come to mean that we don’t voice the hard truths, at risk of giving offense. Dissenting opinion is seen at treasonous disruption in too many organizations. Group think and homogeneity rule over respectful disagreement and intellectual discord.

The result of standing silently by is an appalling lack of integrity and authentic leadership in communities and the workplace. If luck is the “residue of design,” as the English poet John Milton wrote, then perhaps we’ve created our own karma by permitting dishonesty and deceit to succeed, thrive, and even lead.

Every one of these men are just like us…normal people aiming to be exceptional and exceptional results are the product of small, consistent actions. There are many out there who put themselves forth as experts and after enough consistent repetition at anything there’s a level of expertise achieved (i.e. the Malcolm Gladwell 10,000 hour rule). However I think of us all as students at different places along similar paths – learning, applying, improving, and evolving. Myself, I am certainly dedicated to life-long learning and have been studying peak performance for over 20 years. I’m here to be your guide and resource to the best, most effective information available from the top of the corporate world, elite military teams, educational institutions, speakers, and authors spanning our 6 Pillars of Performance – six foundational, interconnected areas in which to focus and improve.

6 Pillars of Performance

  • Mind – Concentration, connection, mental toughness, meditation, breath, introspection
  • Body – Movement, fueling, fasting, hydration, supplements, sleep, personal care
  • Soul – Heart, courage, compassion, passion, purpose, values
  • World – Service to and relationships with family, friends, community, country
  • Work – Education, career, personal finance, wealth management
  • Play – Sport, outdoors, nature, art, hobbies

Mastery Tenets

We’ll also explore a set of foundational tenets and discuss how they can be of benefit:

  • Surround yourself with people better than you
  • Be of value and service to others
  • Live by a set of values, an ethos
  • Do common things uncommonly well
  • Learn constantly and teach others
  • Face your fears and adversity head on
  • Challenge yourself to do hard things
  • Embrace discomfort
  • Set big hairy goals

At Man of Mastery you’ll meet gold-standard names in the space but will also get off the beaten path to unique topics and guests that I’m excited to share in the coming weeks. These are incredible men we are interviewing with powerful stories and we distill down the best to make good use of your time. You are not going to want to miss out, so subscribe.

While most interviews tend to glorify success – the end result or event, we emphasize uncovering the journey and process to arrive there. It is helpful to shed light on failures as a tool to learn how to adapt, overcome, and continue along the path toward success. Studying only the victory misses the chance to understand how a race was won before it even started – in the preparation, training, and visualization. Or how the make or break point in a victory comes along the way in the darkest mental and physical moments when the mind fights back and the body believes it, but you push through to that next tiny goal and the next and the next.

We will delve into not just “what”, but “how.” It’s fine to read about daily routine from someone whose entire day is a fitness regiment, but we take a look at real life, practical application such as tips and techniques to apply in the car, the office, in airports, airplanes, and hotels, and while running the kids to practice. We’ll aim to accelerate efficiency, paradoxically, by slowing down – accomplishing more than ever in the same hours of the day – moving with strength, calm, and awareness amongst the chaos.

I’m a father, husband, author, and corporate consultant, specializing in business strategy, process, and technology for start-ups and growth stage businesses as well as large enterprise transformation projects. By all standards I’ve been highly successful, with degrees from a top university followed by an MBA. I’ve worked at major global firms and have been a leading part of several successful startups. I’ve been fortunate to travel the world, visiting unique and amazing places on 6 continents. Now, in my late 40s, I’m the strongest, healthiest, fastest, and fittest I’ve been in a long time, possibly ever. But this wasn’t always the case.

At 30, I sustained a crippling back injury, requiring surgery with no certainty of a cure. The issue was so debilitating that, as a grown man, my Mom had to put my socks on for me. Along with the physical side, everything else slid from there – flexibility, mobility, focus on nutrition, and motivation. I went from a very active lifestyle and intense sports to learning pain management, where the effort to lean over a sink and shave or stand in a shower was so excruciating and nauseating that I’d have to lie down (i.e. collapse in a cold sweat) to rest in between.

Over time, by research and personal trial-and-error I made adjustments to nutrition and supplementation, discovered chiropractic, and ventured into yoga. Eventually I clawed my way back to a normal level of life, work, fitness, and activity.

As recently as 3-4 years ago, launching another startup, I felt like everything was once again buzzing along. The family was well, work was exciting, and I was the typical weekend warrior at sports and following a standard gym routine. But something wasn’t quite right or was still feeling out of balance.

It took me not one, but two electronic scale purchases to believe that I was 25-30 pounds heavier, the most I’d ever weighed. A BPI calculation put me at borderline obese! In hindsight, I wasn’t getting the right nutrition, fueling, or hydration. The traditional workout approach of a lifting routine at the gym, jogging, and recreational soccer wasn’t building a useful or effective level of fitness and I was definitely hyper-stressed, not sleeping well, and unable to recharge and recover. In fact, here’s a chart where you can see my weight and body fat peaking three years ago.

Outwardly, perhaps the success was there, but at best it was highly imbalanced and, in reality, needed a wholesale change in approach. I would propose that being successful is external – someone else’s measure whereas feeling successful comes from within and involves finding happiness doing things of meaning and real impact.

So, I went searching for a more integrated form of health, wellness, and fitness, mental and physical, researching how to elevate performance but also achieve success in a form that felt fulfilling and meaningful. The old proverb says that “when the student is ready, the master will appear.” I must have been way overdue because along came several intersecting sources of inspiration and coaching! I look forward to bringing each of them to you in upcoming articles and as interview guests on the podcast. For now, I’m in a good place to launch in at big goals for 2019 and beyond.

Stop waiting. The time is now. We’ve been brought together for a reason. Take a look below at what I’ve got planned and consider joining me and joining up with this community of incredible men!
